Already in 1940, it was reported that a cross stood at the location then called "Hohenbühel." Ignaz von Kürsinger writes in his book "Der Lungau" that "due to a vow made in 1780 by a citizen and Lebzelter (gingerbread baker) from Tamsweg, a chapel was built at the same site." (Lungauer Nachrichten, July 15, 1999). In 1998, the Kreuzbühelkapelle was lovingly restored inside and out with generous support from the Federal Monuments Office by the diploma restorers Mag. Christoph Tinzl and Heike Frikke-Tinz from Salzburg. The six figures inside the chapel were restored by Friedrich Thaler from Salzburg. The Mariapfarrer (Marian priest) and metal artist Hannes Neumann renewed the entrance grille. On the occasion of the 50th birthday of Örglwirt Armin Santner, the Kreuzbühelkapelle was re-consecrated in 1999 by Pastor Matzinger.
