Kraushöhle

Landl, Styria

naturführung

Just a short hike through the Nothklamm gorge from beautiful Gams, you quickly transform into a cave explorer. The Kraushöhle drills deep into the Annerlbauernkogel. The rock formations, covered in white lime milk, appear to be made for eternity. Entry is only permitted with a jacket. If you don't have one, you can borrow one of the mint green or purple items that the members of the Gams Volunteer Fire Brigade have prepared in the wooden visitor's hut. Then begins the walk through one of Austria's oldest show caves. And you immediately hear superlatives: "The world's first electrically lit cave." "The largest gypsum-bearing cave in the German-speaking world." "The only show cave in Europe where hydrogen sulfide converts limestone to gypsum." No horror: Kraus! It's no wonder that the good Franz Kraus, who actually came from the Viennese suburbs, immediately secured a small house in Gams to become a caveman again. The entrance has existed since 1881; a wooden ladder from that time is still preserved, although no one wants to use the ladder anymore. It's much better to explore with a flashlight, retro jacket, and a stylish helmet. The Kraushöhle is part of the UNESCO Global Geoparks Network.
