Kloster und Wallfahrtskirche Maria Waldrast

Maria Waldrast has been a popular pilgrimage site for pilgrims from all over the world for centuries. The Servite monastery with its church is located at 1,638 m and is one of the highest monasteries in Europe. In 1409, a building permit was issued for a small pilgrimage church, which, according to a legend, was to be built at the site of Mary's apparition in a forest clearing. The terracotta reliefs of the 14 Stations of the Cross on the old pilgrim's path were created by H. Buchgschwender. In 1429, the completion of the building is documented, and in 1465, the pilgrimage church was consecrated. In 1621, the monastery was founded and underwent a renovation. Visible are the Neoclassical nave, Baroque altars inside, a late Gothic Madonna with Child, the altarpiece of the Assumption of Mary, a folk altar with the Mater Dolorosa, a ceiling fresco in the choir depicting the discovery of the miraculous image, and the votive tablets in the votive chapel.
