Best time of day/year: March to November, partly susceptible to wind. Rock quality: Porous cellular dolomite. Atmosphere: The rugged massif always offers shady climbs. Approach: From the chapel, head southwest on the hiking trail across the meadow to the fence crossing. Immediately after crossing, a path branches off to the right from the hiking trail, leading steeply uphill to the Sauzahn. Approximately 10 minutes from the chapel. Distance: Approx. 20 km from Steyr, approx. 7 km from Losenstein. Important notes: The access from the south (see sketch) should only be used if the car can be parked without problems at the starting point (intersection of several farm roads on the height west of Sauzahnbauer) to prevent obstructions for vehicles of the surrounding farmers (milk trucks, etc.)! Diverting to the parking lot at the Schöffthaler Chapel should be a matter of course and only requires a driving distance of 1.5 km: On the farm road to the east, past the Sauzahnbauer, to the Laussa – Großraming road and 200 meters to the left to the Schöffthaler-Höhe. From the direction of Laussa or Großraming to the Schöffthaler Höhe (3 km east of Laussa). Park at the roadside near the chapel. Public transport: The Ennstalbahn runs between Linz and Weißenbach-St. Gallen. Details at www.ooevv.at. Train stations are located in Ternberg, Trattenbach, Losenstein, Reichraming, Großraming, Küpfern, Kastenreith, Kleinreifling and Weißenbach-St. Gallen. Arrival by car: From Salzburg/Linz: A1 motorway exit Enns-Steyr > B115 into the Ennstal. From Vienna: A1 motorway exit Haag > B42 > B122 > B115 into the Ennstal. From Passau: A8 Passau > Wels > A1 to motorway exit Enns-Steyr > B115 into the Ennstal. From Graz: A9 Pyhrnautobahn > motorway exit Klaus > Grünburg > into the Ennstal.
