Best time of day/year: Year-round area, often climbable even in winter. Dries quickly after rain due to its exposed location.Rock quality: Cracks, dihedrals, and slabs in the best limestone. Sometimes a bit grassy in the easier routes. The difficult routes require good crimp strength and technique.Atmosphere: Free-standing tower, visible from afar from Losenstein, with over 100 years of climbing history. Partially with an alpine touch (does not refer to the belaying). Impressive panoramic view from the summit.Approach: From Hackerbauer towards Schieferstein (marked and signposted). Continue straight on the hiking trail from the turn-off to the Pfennigsteinmauer (at the dilapidated high stand) (do not follow the Schiefersteinweg that branches off to the left immediately after the high stand) to the north side of the Pfennigstein. Walking time 20 minutes from Hackerbauer.Distance: From Losenstein approx. 2.3 km | approx. 5 minutes driving timeImportant notes: Caution on the access ledge below the east and south faces. The Pfennigstein is completely unsuitable for children due to the risk of falling at the access points.Park space-savingly and be sure to leave enough space for the access road to Hackerbauer.Arrival by car:From Salzburg/Linz: A1 motorway exit Enns-Steyr > B115 into the EnnstalFrom Vienna: A1 motorway exit Haag > B42 > B122 > B115 into the EnnstalFrom Passau: A8 Passau > Wels > A1 to motorway exit Enns-Steyr > B115 into the EnnstalFrom Graz: A9 Pyhrnautobahn > motorway exit Klaus > Grünburg > into the EnnstalFrom Losenstein towards Großraming to the cemetery at the edge of the village. Turn left before the cemetery and at the fork immediately following, turn right. In 2 km you will reach the parking lot (on the left side) at the junction of the access road to Hackerbauer.
