Natura 2000 - Kirchkogel near Pernegg Altitude: 812 m Area: 46 ha The Kirchkogel itself represents a large serpentine mass overlaid by a mighty amphibolite mantle. Serpentine, alongside heavy metal, dolomite, and saline soils, is considered the prototype of an ecological extreme site. The sparsely forested serpentine slopes are to be regarded as a relict site of the first order. The area is characterized by vegetation types that are unique for Central Europe, both in themselves and due to their close networking with completely contrasting contact communities (gorge forests, acidic Luzula-beech forests). Specifically noteworthy here are the Erico-Pinetum sylvestris asplenietosum cuneifolii, the serpentine-snow heath-Scots pine forest, as well as the Vaccinio vitis-idaeae-Pinetum rhododendretosum ferruginei, the block-Scots pine forest in its local manifestation over serpentine.Further information about the Kirchkogel and its protected area can be found in the info folder of the State of Styria.Take the opportunity to travel by public transport.
