Kirche zum hl. Josef Schmirn

St. Jodok-Schmirn-Vals, Tyrol

Among the special sights in the municipality of Schmirn is the large parish church of St. Josef, which was built in 1757 by Franz de Paula Penz. The cemetery with its elaborate wrought-iron crosses is also particularly beautiful. The interior of the church is adorned with sweeping Rococo stucco work and the magnificent frescoes painted by the Baroque painter Anton Zoller from Telfs, supported by his son Josef Anton. The late Classicist altars (1843) boast in solemn black and gold. The main altarpiece (Death of St. Josef) was painted in 1843 by the Nazarene Caspar Jele from Ried im Oberinntal. The Rococo sarcophagus on the left side altar contains the body of St. Felix. At Christmas, a graceful nativity relief by Josef Bachlechner is displayed. The Easter tomb is also noteworthy.
