Kirche St. Jakob

Gries, Tyrol

In an idyllic landscape on a hill, west of Gries, lies the late Romanesque church in honor of Saint James, the patron saint of pilgrims and travelers. A document from the Premonstratensian monastery Wilten reports that the knight Peter von Trautson, who owned property in the Wipptal and made a pilgrimage to Santiago de Compostela in 1305, founded the church. St. Jakob is nowadays gladly visited by pilgrims on the Way of St. James. The entrance door to the church is always open, although direct access is blocked by a gate.
