Holzgau, Tyrol

Our parish is the second oldest in the valley and has existed since 1401. For several centuries, the village itself and the area around Holzgau belonged ecclesiastically to the Diocese of Augsburg. After the Napoleonic era, Holzgau came to the Diocese of Brixen and now we are part of the Diocese of Innsbruck. The church was rebuilt and enlarged three times, most recently in 1860/61. Today it presents itself in Neo-Romanesque style with Neo-Gothic altars and Nazarene painting. The framing of the side portal is a relic of the former Baroque church. The high altar painting shows the Assumption of Mary, our patron saint, which is celebrated solemnly with a procession on August 15. The stained glass windows deserve special attention. At the left side altar, one can view the relic of St. Eugenius from the catacombs of Rome, which the Augsburg merchant Deschler gave to us as a gift. The baptismal font in the antechamber is among the oldest inventory of the church.
