Keltendorf Schwarzenbach

Schwarzenbach, Lower Austria

museumstour

The Celtic Village Schwarzenbach – the adventure community in the Bucklige Welt! In the 2nd century BC, the Celts lived around Schwarzenbach in what is now Lower Austria in one of the largest city-like settlements in the Eastern Alpine region. It is assumed that the inhabitants were nobles, as well as traders, craftsmen, and farmers. With high probability, the smelted iron ores from the Oberpullendorf Bay were further processed here. Trade with the processed raw materials is also said to have flourished here. The former oppidum - a type of settlement of that time with a city wall and an enclosed town center - is a significant testimony to the past. Meanwhile, the University of Vienna has been conducting intensive archaeological excavations here for 14 years. A large part of the living and working areas could be reconstructed. As part of guided tours, visitors immerse themselves in the everyday life of the Celts and learn interesting facts about the history of the region. Guided Tours We offer 1.5-hour guided tours through the Celtic rampart, the archaeological open-air museum, and up to the 26 m high observation tower. New from May 2023: Elevator in the observation tower for barrier-free access! By arrangement, we are also happy to organize lunch for you and your group at one of our restaurateurs in the village or in the Turmcafé on the Keltenberg (open Fridays, Saturdays, Sundays, and public holidays)!
