Katholische Stadtpfarrkirche Schladming

Schladming-Rohrmoos-Pichl, Styria

The church stands in the city center and is surrounded by a cemetery, where the Anna Chapel is located to the northeast. An initial consecration of a church is one of the first documented mentions of Schladming; in 1299, the town was a filial parish (Catholic) of the neighboring community in Haus. In the 16th century, unlike in Haus, a schism occurred in Schladming. An independent Catholic parish was not established in Schladming until 1857. The city parish church is late Gothic in its core and received its current form as a three-nave, five-bay hall church through extensive reconstruction between 1522 and 1532. The tower has had an onion dome since 1832, which was faithfully restored after a fire in 1937. The high altar dates from 1702 to 1704 by Peter Hafner from Radstadt and Martin Neuberg from Admont. The central painting of the high altar depicts St. Achatius and is surrounded by figures of the apostles Peter and Paul, as well as John the Evangelist and John the Baptist. The left side altar depicts St. Luke and the Coronation of Mary, while the right side altar is a Rosary altar. Various other figures are displayed in the church, including a figure of St. Sebastian on one of the ceiling pillars and a Madonna figure. The fields of the gallery balustrade are painted with figures of saints.
