Kapelle des weißen Lichts

St. Leonhard im Pitztal, Tyrol

The Chapel of White Light, a small sacred work of art, has stood on the Pitztal Glacier at an altitude of 2,900 meters since 1998. With its white, luminous Carrara marble, it forms a strong contrast to the surrounding red rock. Carrara marble is also the most famous and highest quality natural stone in the world. The chapel was created by the Tyrolean artist Rudi Wach (born 1934), who lives in Milan. Like a sculpture, the chapel was intended to stand independently and yet blend into the white mountain world. It was important to the sculptor and artist Rudi Wach that his building did not compete with nature created by God, but rather honored it by making the beauty of the mountain world shine even more through a white sculpture.
