Kalvarienbergkirche mit Lodron´scher Gruft

After a short forest walk, past eight Stations of the Cross, one reaches the Kalvarienbergkirche. It was endowed in 1629 by the Raitenauers and executed in the first half of the 17th century by Master Durregger from Millstatt. The small church is a simple, small building with a rectangular apse and two small towers on the gable front. The high altar dates from the first half, the beautiful wrought-iron choir screen with the Lodron lion from the second half of the 17th century. From 1639 to 1932, the chapel was owned by the Primogenitur Gmünd. Today it is owned by the municipality of Gmünd. Already at the beginning of the 20th century, there were cracks in the walls and a subsidence. The static condition has remained unchanged since then. (Thanks to the Gmünder Goldhaubenfrauen restoration in 2002). The crypt of the Konstantin Graf Lodron Allodial Heirs on the Kalvarienberg. In 1840, Count Konstantin Lodron had a crypt built into the slope behind the Kalvarienbergkirche, which has three by four burial niches on both the left and right. It is a longitudinally rectangular, barrel-vaulted room with a late-classical facade. The crypt was never part of the Fideikommiss (entailed estate) and is today the only remaining possession of the Lodron family in Gmünd. Twelve family members were buried in the crypt until 2001 – the last burial was Carl Cajetan Graf Lodron in 1918. His granddaughter Maria Josefine wanted to be buried next to her grandfather, and so in June 2001, there was another burial and a renewed restoration of the crypt. …and today… Processions to the Kalvarienbergkirche still take place. Upon request, baptisms and weddings are also performed here. Röm. Kath.
