Kalvarienbergkirche Altmünster

Kalvarienbergkirche Altmünster

Altmünster, Upper Austria

This was built under Pastor Josef Stadler between 1844 and 1846 on a moraine hill in front of the Gmundnerberg. The building site for this church was provided free of charge to the parish by the couple Reisenberger, the then owners of the Hocheckergut. The "Church of the Holy Cross" was solemnly consecrated in 1846. The chapel also received two bells, but these had to be handed over in 1916. The ravages of time and a severe storm in 1974 almost completely destroyed the church, making a restoration a necessity, which was completed in 1975. Today, thanks to many volunteers, the Kalvarienbergkirche has once again been made into a jewel of the town of Altmünster. On the old procession path from the Altmünster parish church over the "holy mountain" (Brennbichlstraße) to the Kalvarienberg, there are four chapels dedicated to the mysteries of the sorrowful rosary.
