Kalvarienberg - Thannhausen

Weiz, Styria

In total, 15 Stations of the Cross can be seen and experienced. Hikers and those praying may draw strength for their own lives from contemplating the suffering, death, and resurrection of Jesus. The first parts of the Kalvarienberg (Calvary) complex date back to 1741. At that time, Dominikus Ignaz Tschartsch, administrator of the Thannhausen dominion, began the construction of this complex with the crucifixion group (Christ and the two thieves) on the Büchlberg hill. Two years later, four more brick shrines were erected on the way to the Kalvarienberg and adorned with images of the Sorrowful Rosary. In 1957, the Thannhausen Castle administration arranged for the erection of an Olive Garden group on the castle wall opposite today's Gasthaus Schlosstaverne. The path from here to the Kalvarienberg corresponds in length to Christ's path of suffering in Jerusalem. A detailed route description and explanations of the images at the stations can be found in the brochure "Kalvarienberg Thannhausen," which is available for a voluntary donation at the Thannhausen municipal office, the parish office on Weizberg, and at GH Schlosstaverne.
