Kalvarienberg - höchste Erhebung mit einzigartigem Fernblick

The Kalvarienberg is the highest elevation in the municipality (562 m) with a chapel. From the Kalvarienberg, you have a beautiful panoramic view in every season - from the Böhmerwald to the Dachstein. Due to its location - not far from the town center and close to the Donausteig - the Kalvarienberg is accessible on foot all year round (also with a stroller/asphalt). From there, you can also comfortably hike on to the Stauf castle ruins. The Kalvarienberg was consecrated as early as 1838, but the station chapels fell into disrepair towards the end of the 19th century. In 1938, the then-serving pastor Dr. Waslmayr decided to renew the Stations of the Cross. He enlisted the Franciscan P. Herkulan Baldauf for the picture designs, and his confrere P. Philipp-Jakob Vergott for the execution. When P. Philipp unexpectedly died, P. Herkulan completed the pictures for the Stations of the Cross. However, they were never installed, probably due to the turmoil of the war and post-war period. In 1973, Pastor Wundsam discovered the pictures and suggested their installation. In 1974, the Stations of the Cross were erected in a short time with many voluntary working hours. At the turn of the year 2013/2014, numerous helpers diligently lent a hand and provided many voluntary working hours, material donations, and financial support. Thus, the chapel shines again in new splendor. From the newly designed resting place on the Kalvarienberg, you have a beautiful panoramic view from the Böhmerwald to the Dachstein - in every season and at any time of day! By bus or car, by bike or on foot from the town center of Haibach or near the Gasthof Hoamat.
