At Jungfrauenstein near Dornedt, the municipalities of Natternbach, St. Ägidi, and Kopfing meet. This was also the meeting place of the old regional courts Peuerbach, Schärding, and Vichtenstein. For many centuries, this point also separated the lands of Austria and Bavaria, as evidenced today by an old border stone from 1691. The Jungfrauenstein, as an offering stone, must have been deeply ingrained in the memory of the local population; it was considered inviolable. Strange stories surround the Jungfrauenstein. Even the origin of this "Wackelstein" (wobble stone) seemed inexplicable to people: three giant maidens are said to have carried the Jungfrauenstein in their "Fürtuch" (apron), before they let it fall at this spot. As a result, the stone appeared sacred to the population, and any attempt to dislodge it from its base was heavily punished. The "Jungfernstein" is a wobble and swing stone. The two stones of the Jungfernstein rest only on a small base, so that they can be made to swing with just two fingers of one hand. These stones formed through a special weathering process of granite. Such a strange and rare natural formation has attracted people and sparked their imagination throughout history. It is believed that the stones served as a cult site in prehistoric times.
