Jakobskapelle

The Jakobskapelle was built on the eastern edge of the cemetery of the Baroque church St. Ulrich, on the already existing foundations of the cemetery wall. The path into the interior of the chapel opens through the two-winged portal by Tomas Hoke. The chapel features a striking architectural structure, visible in the change of materials from wood to exposed concrete and glass. The interior is divided into three parts and begins with the assembly room, a timber-frame construction in the shape of a ship. The “belly of the ship” is an enclosed place of peace and concentration. The "gate building" was constructed from reinforced concrete and served as a base for the pictorial program by the painter Armin Guerino. Two themes are central here: Jacob's Ladder and the labyrinth doubling as a bearer of the metamorphosis of human existence. The painting extends over the entire exposed concrete wall. The breakthrough in the large wall leads eastward into the spatial center of the building, a 2.40 x 2.40 m glass cube, the place of repose. Light can penetrate the room undisturbed, it is reflected and refracted, lending the chapel a contemplative atmosphere.
