Huf- und Hackenschmiede Lindermayr - Schauschmiede

The Huf- und Hackenschmiede (hoof and hoe forge) was the "Hofschmiede" (court forge) of Spital Abbey over 500 years ago, and from 1808 for more than 150 years, it was a tool forge, especially for carters, lumberjacks, and farmers. The former court forge of Spital am Pyhrn Abbey originated due to economic traffic to and from Venice in the period after 1300. The first verifiable blacksmith, Andreas, still worked for the hospital. Andreas Ferdinand Lindermayr took over the court forge at a time when the Baroque transformation of the abbey promised fruitful work. The artistic lines of the chancel screen of the abbey church, completed by him in 1734, became famous. The blacksmith delivered his commissions as far as the central Steyrtal, including grave crosses, window baskets, inn signs, and door fittings. His son Matthäus expanded the business to include a Frätschlerei (woodturning workshop), a general store, and also operated a gunsmith and watchmaker's shop. The renovation for the 1998 Provincial Exhibition made it possible to set up a demonstration forge. It also includes an exhibition on the history of the forge and the blacksmith's craft with interesting exhibits. Note: The chancel screen of the Spital am Pyhrn Abbey Church, made by Andreas Ferdinand Lindermayr, is considered one of the most beautiful blacksmith works in Austria. Try your hand as a "blacksmith" and work the glowing iron with a hammer.
