Archaeological finds prove the Neolithic settlement of the Schandorf area as early as the beginning of the 6th millennium BC. At the time of the so-called "Iron Princes" or "Iron Barons" around 750 BC, Schandorf was at its wealthiest. The smelting and marketing of the newly invented metal iron made the population very prosperous. The tumuli in the Schandorf forest still bear witness to the wealth and dense settlement along the Pinka at that time.The unique significance of the Schandorf tumulus field for Europe results from the accumulation of 285 giant burial mounds from the Hallstatt period, up to 16 meters high and up to 40 meters wide. In addition, there are two groups of Roman-era tumuli, which bear witness to the dense settlement during the Roman period.
