Hölzelstein

The Hölzelstein near Oggau has been called "Ayers Rock" - which is, of course, an exaggeration. This is more like just a small rock. The rock in Burgenland has one thing in common with the world-famous Australian monolith: it also looks as if it fell from the sky - in the flat land. The Hölzelstein is an approximately 60-meter-long limestone reef, which at its highest point reaches a rock height of about five meters on one side. So there are people who are not kidding when they say they went climbing at Lake Neusiedl. 300 meters east of the Hölzelstein, a second rocky outcrop rises from the plain, on which the Rosaliakapelle stands. The local historian Gerhard Marx observed that the needle of a compass placed on the threshold of the chapel continuously rotates there.
