Hochofenmuseum Radwerk IV

Vordernberg, Styria

ausstellungmuseumstour

The Radwerk IV represents the largest iron-historical sight along the EISENSTRASSE between Leoben and Steyr and is the only fully equipped charcoal blast furnace in Austria. Tourists and experts from all over the world visit this magnificent testimony to historical pig iron production. Blast furnace plants where a water wheel drove the blower for combustion air were called Radwerke. In Vordernberg, there were 14 Radwerke along the stream. The Radwerk IV, built in 1846 in place of an old facility in a monumental, classical style, was placed under monument protection as early as 1928 due to its iron-historical significance after operations ceased in 1911, and was made accessible to the public as a blast furnace and iron museum after restoration work in 1959. The blast furnace museum also includes the Museum of the Geschichteclub Alpine Donawitz, which vividly describes steel production in Donawitz from the past to the present.
