Not everyone knows this...The "Gisela" (named after a daughter of Emperor Franz Joseph) is the last of a total of five steamships that have plied the picturesque Traunsee. It was built in the Ruston shipyard in Vienna-Floridsdorf. Through an exemplary rescue operation, this unique ship was placed under monument protection in 1981 as the first floating object and could be completely renovated between 1980 and 1986. On board the ship is Austria's "first floating post office". It is possible to send letters or postcards directly from the ship all over the world. Our flagship celebrated its 135th birthday in 2006 and features the world's last actively operating oscillating (moving cylinder) compound steam engine (built in 1870 by Prager Maschinenbau AG). The Gisela is owned by the association "Freunde der Stadt Gmunden", which operates a very interesting source of information about the history of the city with the website "Historisches Gmunden".
