Himmelsleiter

Sigleß, Burgenland

naturführung

The Himmelsleiter (Ladder to Heaven) landscape project by artist Heinz Bruckschwaiger is located on the B32 Rosaliaradwanderweg between Sigleß and Krensdorf, on a hill with a wide view to the west towards Hohe Wand and Schneeberg, and to the east as far as the Ruster Hügelland and Lake Neusiedl. The Himmelsleiter was designed and opened in 1992. On two sides, 12 granite stepping stones each lead up the hill. At the top, in the middle of the hill, lies a large, flattened granite slab with two indentations. These are intended to represent the two notches of ladder stiles. In reference to the biblical story of Jacob, who in a dream saw a ladder leading to heaven, Heinz Bruckschwaiger stages a conceptual ladder to heaven here. Around the hill stand 12 cherry trees, whose crowns almost touch, forming a white ring of blossoms in spring or a green ring of leaves in summer. The circular shape formed by the cherry trees is a symbol of infinity and eternity. Throughout the year, the Himmelsleiter invites visitors to rest and linger: in spring with the white blossoms of the cherry trees, in June with the red cherries, throughout the summer with the fragrant meadow flowers, and in autumn with the colorful foliage. A special highlight every two years is a music festival directly at the Himmelsleiter. The Himmelsleiter is freely accessible all year round and can be visited at any time!
