The Herzogstuhl near Maria Saal is a significant historical monument of Carinthia and a symbol of the state's history. From the 9th century to the 15th century, the stone double seat served as the site for the investiture of the Carinthian dukes. The solemn act took place outdoors and involved a symbolic transfer of land and power. The Herzogstuhl consists of two superimposed stone benches, characterized by Romanesque construction. The upper seat was reserved for the duke, the lower for the speaker of the people. The Herzogstuhl is located on the Zollfeld near Maria Saal and is a popular excursion destination. It is considered an important testament to medieval legal tradition and Carinthian identity.
