Herz-Jesu-Kirche am Pöllauer Kalvarienberg

The Kalvarienberg Church, located in the Pöllauer Tal Nature Park, was built in 1699 and expanded to its current size in 1750 by the Pöllau master builder Remigius Horner. In 1776, the interior was adorned with ceiling paintings by Johann Adam von Mölck. The high altar from the construction period deepens the patronage of this church: the Most Sacred Heart of Jesus as the core of the Passion. A Lamentation group (Pietà) ultimately refers to the adjacent Kalvarienberg directly behind the church. The oldest parts are the crucifixion group and the figure of the repentant Peter from 1706. A larger Heart of Mary Chapel was added, built in 1715 by Remigius Horner. Matthias von Görz created the rosary paintings in this chapel, which likewise continues the theme of the Herz-Jesu-Kirche, from the Son of God to the Mother of God. In 1774, the path from Pöllau to the Kalvarienberg was adorned with Stations of the Cross. The current frescoes are by Felix Barazutti and were created in 1919. Opening hours: This church is not open by default. Visiting the Stations of the Cross is possible at any time. "SAM" stands for "Sammeltaxi Oststeiermark" (shared taxi East Styria) and closes the mobility gap where buses and trains do not run.
