Photo: Haydn Geburtshaus RohrauRohrau, Lower Austria
Southeast of Vienna, in the Lower Austrian municipality of Rohrau, is the birthplace of two of the most significant composers in music history: Joseph and Michael Haydn. Joseph Haydn was born on March 31, 1732, in the reed-thatched farmhouse, which master wagon maker Mathias Haydn had built around 1728, and spent the first six years of his life there. On September 13, 1737, his brother Michael, also highly musically gifted, was born. Even though both composers left their parents' home in childhood, they remained connected to their birthplace throughout their lives. The former home of the Haydn family was acquired by the Province of Lower Austria in 1958, adapted as a museum, and has since served as a venue for various cultural events. Between October 2016 and September 2017, the listed memorial was carefully renovated and reopened as a renewed exhibition and event center on September 14, 2017, just in time for Michael Haydn's 280th birthday.
