In the western part of Styria, nestled in the mountains of the Totes Gebirge, lies Lake Grundlsee – also known as the Styrian Sea. With a length of around five kilometers and an area of almost five square kilometers, it is the largest lake in Styria. The clear water, excellent water quality, and surrounding natural scenery make it an attractive destination for those seeking relaxation and nature lovers. Several public bathing areas around the lake invite visitors to swim – for example, in Gößl, at the Grundlsee lido, or near the Seeklause. Water sports such as sailing, rowing, SUP, and pedal boating are also possible. Lake Grundlsee is rich in fish and popular with anglers; fishing licenses are available on site. A continuous circular hiking trail largely runs directly along the shore and offers impressive views. The Grundlsee boat trip offers a special experience with the Three-Lakes Tour, which connects Lake Grundlsee with Lake Toplitzsee and Lake Kammersee. The tour combines motorboat and Plätte (flat-bottomed boat) rides through an almost untouched natural landscape. Lake Grundlsee is easily accessible – via the B145 and with connections to public transport from Bad Aussee. As part of the Ausseerland, Lake Grundlsee stands for a unique combination of nature, tradition, and leisure quality in Styria.
