Granitmuseum

Schärding, Upper Austria

ausstellungmuseumstour

to introduce visitors to one of the most important industries in our region. The old craftsmanship of stone breakers and stonemasons is shown here with various exhibits. But sculpture in granite is also to be brought closer to visitors in this museum. For many artists, Schärding granite is the starting point for their creations. Some of these works are exhibited here in the Granite Museum and are intended to bring you closer to the work of sculptors from the Bavarian and Upper Austrian regions. Granite is closely linked to Schärding. Already in the Stone Age, it served the inhabitants well. Axes and millstones bear witness to this. The Celts built walls around their dwellings from roughly hewn blocks. Many foundations of Roman forts or country villas were made from Schärding granite. Granite experienced a special boom as a building material in the Middle Ages. In addition to churches and monasteries, it was also ideally suited for fortress construction. The best proof of its durability is provided by the pillars of the old Innbrücke, which was completed in 1310 and has withstood all devastating floods of the Inn. From the 16th century onwards, granite was also used in simpler buildings. Many old Grander (stone troughs) and fruit presses bear witness to this. The Granite Museum is located next to the Wassertor.
