Glücksrad in der Pfarrkirche Bad Waltersdorf

During restoration work, a large painting (approx. 3x4 m) was uncovered in the chancel. It depicts an ocher-colored wheel with a cross-shaped axle, which is being turned by 4 kings, with the remains of a red dress visible in its center. The secret of the painting was revealed by the text in Gothic script located below the wheel: "Das Glück Radt" (The Wheel of Fortune). Such a Wheel of Fortune is very rare – it is unique in Styria; one was uncovered in Spitz an der Donau in Lower Austria, as well as in the Lichtenberg castle ruins in South Tyrol. The Wheel of Fortune shows the vicissitudes in the lives of people & nations, with the symbolism of 4 kings as representatives of earthly power, the transience of wealth and beauty. Even a king must bow to the power of fate. The Wheel of Fortune proves that the old foundations & wall benches remained intact during the reconstruction of the church after its last total destruction in 1683.
