Mill Stillebach, St. Leonhard: The stories of the mills and flax cultivation in Innerpitztal are well documented. According to records, grain was already cultivated in the 15th century above Zaunhof at over 1400 m. As early as 1435, there was a mill in the "Mühlleite" in St. Leonhard. In addition to "Hofmühlen" (mills with multiple owners), there were also "Lohnmühlen" (custom mills). At these, farmers had to "pay" by leaving money, grain, or flour for the milling work. Grain was cultivated up to Mittelberg, mostly two-row barley, also called "Engadiner Gerste" (Engadine barley). Around 1974, the last grain was harvested in St. Leonhard. Thanks to the efforts of Adolf Brüggler, the "Glasermühle" has survived from the 18th century almost undamaged. Now the mill in Stillebach has been integrated into a new mill building. The builders of the new mill, the Melmer family, are bringing this cultural heritage back to life.
