Bad Gastein, Salzburg
Focuses of the museum include: thermal water, the history of the health spa, local customs, and an art gallery. History The Gasteiner Museum was opened on June 28, 1936, with the "Gasteiner Jubiläumsausstellung" (Gastein Anniversary Exhibition). It celebrated the 500th anniversary of Kaiser Friedrich III.'s stay in the spa. The event was attended by the then Federal President, the state governor, and the mayor. This attendance already shows the appreciation that official Austria had for this first Gastein collection, which was assembled by the then spa director Heinrich von Zimburg. Soon, the museum was enriched by gifts and loans from many Gastein families, including a collection of paintings by the court painter of Archduke Johann, a health spa department, typical Gastein minerals, and a bed with memorabilia from gold mining. In 1939, after the outbreak of World War II, the museum was closed and the loans were returned. In 1946, reconstruction began. A mineral collection from Böckstein collectors was added to the museum's holdings. The museum could not develop in the so-called Grillparzer corner of the old Kursaal. In the winter season of 1974/75, a new chapter began at Haus Austria, which provided its premises. After the sale of Haus Austria, a relocation of the museum was necessary in October 2008. By deciding to keep the museum in the center of Bad Gastein, it was reopened on November 15, 2011, at the Grand Hotel de l’Europe.
