The Alter Platz forms the center of the "medieval city" and was once its marketplace. In 1252, the city founder Duke Bernhard von Spanheim was granted city rights. In 1518, Emperor Maximilian gifted the burned-down city to the provincial estates for reconstruction. The Trinity Column (Plague Column) was originally erected on Heiligengeistplatz in 1681 and expanded in 1683 with a globe, crescent moon, and patriarchal cross. Play equipment for small children is available here. The townhouses and noble palaces are equipped with multi-story arcaded courtyards and feature structural cores from the 16th and 17th centuries. Many correspond to the narrow parceling of the medieval city.
