HistoryAt the Mitterkirchen Celtic Village open-air museum, visitors can immerse themselves in the world of the Hallstatt period. Around 20 reconstructed buildings, which have been built here in Machland since 1991, and an extensive workshop and educational program enable a journey back in time to life 2700 years ago, engaging all the senses.The educational program is primarily used by school classes, who can learn pottery, bake flatbread, weave and spin, and build log cabins under expert guidance at the Mitterkirchen Celtic Village. Metalwork and bow-making are also offered.Among the group offers, the Celtic Package and the Celtic Matura are very popular, with the former primarily aimed at senior and pensioner groups who explore the village as part of a guided tour. The Celtic Matura, on the other hand, is particularly booked by private individuals and companies. Here, the "graduates" must "prove" their expertise in numerous prehistoric skills, such as fire-starting and spear-throwing.A regular highlight since 2011 has been the archaeotechnology days "Prunkwagen und Hirsebrei" (Chariots and Millet Porridge), during which the Celtic Village is inhabited by experimental archaeologists. During this time, visitors can observe the specialists as they recreate Hallstatt-period life as authentically as possible. Since 2017, there have been specific focuses for individual crafts, often with a dedicated children's program.Weddings, including the ceremony, can be held and celebrated in the Celtic Village. The open-air museum offers the perfect setting for private celebrations of any size. Children's birthdays and company parties can also take place here in an extraordinary atmosphere.The Celtic Village was built near a former excavation site, which was investigated between 1981 and 1990 with great media interest by the head of the prehistoric and early historic collections of the Upper Austrian State Museum, archaeologist Manfred Pertlwieser. The results of these excavations are presented in a walk-in burial mound at the Mitterkirchen Celtic Village. In addition, there is a video presentation in an information house located in front of the entrance, which comprehensively informs visitors about the archaeological background of the internationally renowned Mitterkirchen site.The partial opening of the village, initially comprising four buildings, took place in 1991. The village was built at the expense of the market town of Mitterkirchen im Machland, primarily with the help of Romanian refugees. Since its inception, the open-air museum has been scientifically supervised by the Upper Austrian State Museum, today by Dr.in Jutta Leskovar.By car via the A1 Westautobahn, exit Enns and continue towards Mauthausen to Perg.
