Open-Air Museum The extensive complex of the open-air museum in Unterrabnitz will, in its final version, depict all aspects of early medieval life in rural settlements. In addition to the existing structures, a farmstead, an iron smelting furnace, an area for livestock keeping, a nature trail, a tar production pit, and a modern museum building with office and seminar areas are planned. In an archaeological open-air museum, visitors are brought closer to their own history in a lively and authentic way through full-scale reconstructions. And for scientists, there is the opportunity to test scientific hypotheses about the construction methods of residential and economic buildings and to gather new insights. Open-air museums have a long tradition in Austria. In Aspern an der Zaya (Lower Austria), one of the oldest open-air museums in Europe is located, where residential and economic buildings from the Stone, Bronze, and Iron Ages have been reconstructed. There are few such facilities in Central Europe for the Early Middle Ages, apart from similar sites in Scandinavia. The early medieval village in Unterrabnitz is intended to represent, for the first time, all aspects of life in rural settlements from that period. It aims to provide insight into the everyday life of that time. Early Middle Ages Archaeological finds indicate that a peasant settlement was established in the area of present-day Unterrabnitz during the Early Middle Ages. The municipality of Unterrabnitz has undertaken to reconstruct part of this settlement as an archaeological open-air museum, to showcase life from that period for locals and visitors.
