Frauenplatz und Frauenkirche

From the Hauptplatz, you reach an atmospheric square, named after its church, through a baroque archway. The Frauenkirche Maria Hilf is a late Baroque building, whose predecessor was first mentioned in 1504. Master builder Michael Schmidt built the tower with its onion dome in 1802. Above the main portal, the stone sculpture of the Sorrowful Mother of God can be seen. One enters the church through a copper gate, a work by theian artist Franz Weiss. The frescoes on the walls and vaults of the choir are by the painter Matthias Schiffer and are dated to the end of the 18th century. In the area of the Frauenplatz, the Jewish population of Radkersburg also lived in the Middle Ages. The synagogue was presumably located on the square where the Frauenkirche stands today. At the end of the 15th century, the Jews were expelled throughout Inner Austria as a result of an edict by Maximilian I. Via the Frauenplatz, you reach the Murgasse. At its confluence with the Theatergasse is the former Capuchin monastery church.
