Immerse yourself in the dark world of the Middle Ages — where history gets under your skin. In the former knight's hall of Sommeregg Castle, high above Lake Millstatt, is the largest museum of legal history and torture in Central Europe. On two floors and around 600 m², more than 100 true-to-original exhibits show how jurisprudence and penal enforcement functioned from the Middle Ages to the early modern period. Thumbscrews, rack, pillory, spiked chair: devices that are shocking today were everyday tools of justice for centuries. The accompanying texts are scientifically prepared and place each exhibit in its historical context. Thus, the tour does not become a horror show, but a serious engagement with a dark chapter of European legal history. New: Audioguide in three languages Starting this season, there is a new audioguide that leads through the exhibition: in German, English, and Italian. This allows the museum to be explored at one's own pace, without being dependent on guided tour dates. A real improvement, especially for Italian and English-speaking guests. Special Exhibition 2026: Torture in the 21st Century Torture is not just a topic of the past. The current special exhibition shows where and how torture is still practiced today, and makes it clear why engaging with it has lost none of its relevance. What else is on offer Those already at the castle can extend their day well: the castle restaurant offers medieval-style dishes, in August the knight games with tournament and medieval market take place, in addition to the flea markets at Easter, Pentecost, and in autumn.
