Fischkalter im Stift Kremsmünster

It continues a building tradition of the early 17th century, in which such an arcaded basin for storing the edible fish needed in the monastery had already been created opposite the portal. Furthermore, the original design by Carlo Antonio Carlone refers to the architectural forms of the Gunther Monument created in 1606-08 under Abbot Alexander a Lacu at the springs of Urspung. This water pater, adorned with arcades, opens like a pavilion on one of the narrow sides to a pond and the landscape opening up behind it. Fish – char, trout, and from November to January, carp – from the monastery waters are available all year round every Friday and Saturday at the monastery nursery, or pre-orders can be picked up there. Draining of the large Schacherteich This special event takes place every year on the Saturday after All Saints' Day. Interested parties are cordially invited and can watch from approximately 8:30 AM. After draining, the carp are moved "for watering out" into smaller bodies of water and into the monastery's Fischkalter (fish tanks), where they lose approximately 20% of their weight until the Christmas sale. The smaller ponds were already drained in October, so that from November, watered-out carp (whole, filleted, or in horseshoe cuts) are available. The Schacherteiche are located on the route between Kremsmünster and Sipbachzell, about five kilometers from the monastery. They were created in 1555 by Abbot Gregor Lechner and serve and served as a drainage system for the Schacher. They are mainly fed by surface water (precipitation) and once had a total area of approximately 20 ha. Due to silting, one can now assume a total water area of about 15-16 ha. Approximately 17 tons of carp are produced in the upper three ponds, with the monastery receiving about 20% of this (partly as payment in kind).
