The Fischerkirche is probably the most valuable building in terms of art and cultural history in the Free City of Rust. The history of this small church is as diverse and multi-layered as the stylistic epochs represented. The core of the church is a Romanesque hall church from the 11th century. The name Fischerkirche only appeared in the mid-20th century, but can be traced back to a legend: In the 13th century, Queen Maria of Hungary, wife of King Bela IV, is said to have been rescued from severe distress on Lake Neusiedl by Rust fishermen while fleeing from Mongols, and out of gratitude she founded the "Nikolausbenefizum", which also included the Marienkapelle, a part of the Fischerkirche.
