The pond was first mentioned in a sales document from Count von Thannhausen to Count von Herberstein in 1657. The pond remained in the possession of the Counts Herberstein until 1954. In 1954, the pond was purchased by the municipality of Großhart. In 1974, the Styrian provincial government declared the pond a nature reserve - a protected landscape area. Until 1975, the pond was leased for fish farming. In 1976, the municipality began to manage the pond itself through angling and continuously expand it. Today, the pond is known far beyond the provincial borders for its naturalness and its rich stock of carp, grass carp, pike, and catfish, as well as various small fish. Pike and zander are available from May 1st. With a day ticket, you can take home 1 carp, 2 tench, and one grass carp or catfish or pike or zander. If you are particularly lucky, you might land a specimen up to 62 kg. If you decide to stay longer, there are three-day tickets and weekly tickets. Swimming with dogs in the pond is forbidden! Fishing regulations: The fishing season lasts from March 1st to November 30th. Fishing is only possible with a provincial fishing license. Children and young people up to 16 years of age may only fish at night when accompanied by a supervisor. Catfish may be fished from March 1st, and pike and zander from May 1st. Perch, mussels, and crayfish are protected all year round. If a fisherman buys 10 day tickets in a season, he receives the eleventh ticket for free. 3 fishing rods with one hook each are allowed. Barbless hooks are mandatory for coarse fish. Treble hooks, except for artificial lures, as well as swallow hooks are forbidden. Fishing with live bait is forbidden. Angling without a night ticket is only permitted between 4:00 AM and 9:00 PM. 2 kg of pre-bait may be used per fishing trip! Pre-baiting without fishing is forbidden! The authorized fisherman may take 1 carp up to 5 kg, 2 tench, and 1 grass carp up to 5 kg or 1 pike or 1 zander, as well as catfish from 80 cm to 40 kg per fishing trip (1 day). The transfer of fish is forbidden! Catches of carp and grass carp over 5 kg may not be kept in a keepnet. Live sale of catfish from the pond is forbidden. To protect the fish, an unhooking mat must be used! Fish that have been caught and are no longer viable must be handed over to the supervisor. The minimum sizes must be strictly observed (carp 40 cm, tench 25 cm, grass carp 60 cm, pike 60 cm, zander 55 cm, and catfish 80 cm). Wading in the pond and laying out bait with boats (including small electric boats), drones, and by swimming is forbidden. Gutting fish at the pond is forbidden. Open campfires are not permitted in the pond area. Annual ticket holders are entitled to carry out checks upon presentation of their annual ticket.
