From the filial church to the modern church building A church was already built in Obermühl between 1770 and 1772 and consecrated to the Birth of Mary. At that time, it was a filial church of the parish church of Kirchberg ob der Donau. Due to the construction of the Aschach Danube power plant, whose backwater reaches Obermühl, the old village was relocated. The old church was demolished and the current church building in modern style was erected on higher ground in 1964 according to plans by the Viennese architect Heinz Scheide. The miraculous image of Mary moved to the new church. In 2007, the church was rebuilt according to plans by architects Josef Schütz and Rainer Habringer and artistically redesigned by Gabriele and Alois Hain from Haslach an der Mühl. Every year on the first Sunday after All Saints' Day, the solemn Danube procession with Zille (flat-bottomed boat) ride and wreath laying takes place.
