Expositurkirche zum Hl. Thomas in Arzl Wald

A chapel dedicated to St. Thomas the Apostle was already mentioned in a deed of donation in 1400 and later in 1493. In 1754 it was destroyed by fire and rebuilt larger. In 1909 the church again fell victim to fire. The new building erected in 1911/12 was almost destroyed again in 1927 during the great fire in Wald, had it not been for Wendelin Gaim from Wenns, who saved it almost single-handedly. The neo-Gothic church, surrounded by the atmospheric cemetery, houses frescoes by the busy painter and restorer RAFAEL THALER from Innsbruck, who painted in a Neo-Late Baroque style with Nazarene influences (Throne of Grace, four Church Fathers, Theresia, Antonius). The group of doubting Thomas with Christ on the high altar, carved by sculptor Nikolaus Krabacher, commemorates the original patronage of the church. The two side figures of St. Joseph and John the Baptist are by Josef Grissemann from Imst. The reliefs of the many Evangelists and St. George in battle with the devil on the pulpit cheeks were created by Andreas Hinterholzer. Of the former Rococo furnishings, St. Margaret from around 1770 has been preserved. Service Sunday 09:45
