1559-1625 all city parish priests were Protestant preachers. The Starhemberg family was also Protestant at that time. The Counter-Reformation of the Habsburgs ended this Protestant heyday. In 1781, Emperor Josef II's Edict of Tolerance enabled an open confession of the Protestant faith. In 1783, the Protestant congregation of Eferding was founded. From 1830-1833, the church – one of the rare "tolerance churches" in its original form – was built under Pastor Friedrich Traugott Kotschny. The house of prayer was not allowed to have the appearance of a church. This resulted in this charming building, which was built with 3 stories, high sash windows, without a tower and bell ringing, with an entrance 50 m from the street. In 1956, a small turret with bells was added. In 1999, a new organ with 18 registers was installed. The Protestant church was only granted equal status with the Catholic church in Austria in 1961!
