Evangelische Christuskirche

Evangelical Parish Mörbisch am SeeThe Evangelical-Lutheran Christuskirche (Christ Church) is located in the municipality of Mörbisch am See in the Eisenstadt-Umgebung district in Burgenland. The Christuskirche belongs to the Evangelical Superintendence A. B. Burgenland within the Evangelical Church A.B. in Austria. The church is a protected monument. The evangelical community of Mörbisch am See belonged to Sopron until 1921. An evangelical community and services in Mörbisch are known from 1578, and an evangelical school soon after. From 1584 to 1606 and from 1674 to 1781, the evangelical faith was forbidden, and religious practice was only possible in secret. Following Joseph II's Patent of Toleration of 1781, the parish was re-established in 1785, and a rectory and schoolhouse were built from 1786 to 1790. The original church, a Toleranzbethaus (tolerance prayer house) without a tower, was built in 1792; the year 1792 is found in the lintel to the sacristy located to the south. The baptismal font also dates from 1792. The current church with a Platzlgewölbe (a type of vault) between girders and pilasters was built from 1853 to 1854 with a neo-Gothic facade and tower by master builder Geschrey from Sarvar. The windows are set in deeply stepped rounded niches. The organ gallery stands on two Tuscan columns. In 1967, the church was structurally expanded and named Christuskirche. The pulpit altar with a three-part classical wall with a mensa (altar table) bears the oil painting Resurrection by Gerhard Gloser from 1976. On the curved pulpit basket with gilded decor, there is a Sower relief, and the sounding board bears an Eye of God and vases. The organ (two manuals, 17 registers) from 1985 was built by Orgelbau Gebrüder Krenn from Graz. A bell dates from Friedrich Seltenhofer from Ödenburg from 1854.
