The European protected area is divided into 3 sub-areas: The Traunschlucht sub-area comprises the section of the Traun valley between Gmunden and Stadl-Paura, the Lambach-Wels sub-area is located downstream from Lambach to Wels, and the Schacherteiche sub-area includes the ponds of the same name and their surroundings in Kremsmünster and Sipbachzell. Furthermore, the nature reserves "Almauen", "Fischlhamerau" and the NSG "Kuhschellenrasen" in Gunskirchen belong to this European protected area.Species (animals, plants) and habitats (protected assets)Animal species:Characteristic protected assets are bird species of waters and forests such as the Common Goldeneye, Goosander, Osprey, European Honey Buzzard, Common Sandpiper, Black Woodpecker, Kingfisher, Eurasian Eagle-Owl, Black Kite, and Western Marsh Harrier. Also numerous amphibian species such as the Alpine Crested Newt and the Yellow-bellied Toad.
