Europaschutzgebiet Höflein Moor

Ebenthal, Carinthia

naturführung

Name: Europaschutzgebiet Höflein Moor Description: The nature reserve was placed under protection by decree of the provincial government in 1965. After the European Union recognized its special worthiness of protection in 2008, the moor was additionally elevated to the status of a Natura 2000 European protected area by decree of the Carinthian provincial government. The protected area lies at an altitude of about 770 meters in a shallow hollow, which is currently mostly surrounded by forest. From the northern edge of the moor, there is a magnificent view of the Hochobir. The conglomerate plate of the Sattnitzstock serves as the geological base of the moor. The moor itself owes its formation to so-called dead ice formation and is thus of glacial origin. The Höflein Moor currently consists of two parts, namely a central raised bog, which is surrounded by a marginal fen. While the typical vegetation of the raised bog mainly consists of sphagnum mosses, bog rosemary, cranberries, as well as heather and bog pines, the marginal fen is primarily formed by so-called sedges. In the outermost marginal zones of the moor, the gradual development into a so-called black alder carr forest is clearly visible.
