Engelszeller Sinnesgarten

Engelhartszell, Upper Austria

ausstellungmuseumstour

1. Station: Old Grape Varieties:The vines planted here all originate from the region, particularly from Sigharting, Schardenberg, Pyrawang and Engelhartszell or Oberranna. The special thing about these vines is that they are old European varieties whose names, however, have been forgotten.2. Station: Herb Garden:Herbs found their way into regional garden culture via the monasteries. The herb garden also features numerous herbs used in the famous Engelszeller Klosterlikör (monastery liqueur). Recipes are, of course, not revealed here.Following a Baroque model, it is divided into five areas representing different bodily functions: stomach/intestines - heart/skin - nerves/vitality - women/birth and central area/head. The effects of the herbs are described in an information sheet.3. Station: Meditation Garden with Labyrinth:The meditation garden is located in the quiet part of the monastery meadow. The special scenic potential with views of the Danube river and the colorful hillside forests of the Donauleiten is enhanced here. The labyrinth is designed in the form of a Classical Labyrinth with seven circuits. This ancient labyrinth form originated from the Cretan archetype and incorporates Christian symbols. The cross shape moves to the center of the labyrinth, thus uniting the idea of closeness to nature and inner contemplation with Christian values. The labyrinth symbolizes humanity's search for self and for a self-righteous way of life. In paths framed by river stones, one reaches the center of the labyrinth by repeatedly changing direction, and then walks back out. It is a symbol and an exercise in internalization, tranquility, and open-mindedness.4. Station: Old Fruit Tree Varieties:The show garden of old fruit tree varieties adjoins to the west and primarily displays regional, old varieties. Among others: various apples, pears, plums, and cherries. Looking, smelling, tasting, and getting to know them is the motto in this part of the garden.5. Station: Water Sensory Path:This Kneipp stream is integrated into the Mini-Donau (Mini-Danube) area (at the alpine reservoir). The small stream can be walked through barefoot and is filled with various types of rock.6. Station: Garden of Confused Senses:This part of the garden was specially designed for the residents of the local Caritas institution invita and is therefore not publicly accessible. It is designed as a therapy garden tailored to the needs of the residents. It is located directly next to Stift Engelszell (Engelszell Abbey) on the grounds of the Wassererlebnis Mini-Donau (Mini-Danube Water Experience).
