Donaukraftwerk Aschach

Donaukraftwerk Aschach

Aschach a.d. Donau, Upper Austria

The water-rich Danube River offers the best conditions for this. In Upper Austria, the energy of the Danube is used by five power plants to generate electricity. The Aschach power plant was built between 1959 and 1964 as the second Austrian Danube power plant at the end of the Danube breakthrough between Sauwald and Mühlviertel. For the local heat supply of the municipalities of Aschach and Hartkirchen, Austria's first FCKW-free large heat pump - serving a public purpose - uses the waste heat from the power plant's machinery. As an additional heat source, the driftwood accumulated at all Danube power plants is incinerated in a biomass combustion plant. The dam of the Aschach power plant extends up to Jochenstein. The operational buildings and lock system are located on the southern bank of the Danube. The power house with 4 machine sets connects to the lower lock head. 4 turbines, arranged alternately left and right-rotating, ensure energy conversion. A project of Donaukraft exemplary throughout Europe - awarded the environmental protection prize of the Province of Upper Austria!Four newly created biotopes in the reservoir offer a habitat for diverse animal and plant life.
