Maria Saal, Carinthia

The pilgrimage and collegiate church Maria Saal is directly connected with the Christianization of Carinthia since the 8th century and, along with Karnburg, is one of the earliest church foundations in Carinthia. Bishop Modestus, sent by the Diocese of Salzburg, founded a collegiate bishopric and consecrated a Marian church, "the church of Saint Mary in Carantania," around 767. Modestus, also called the "Apostle of Carinthia," was buried in the church he built. His tomb is still in the cathedral today. In 1116, the provostry (Provost Roman) established by Archbishop Konrad of Salzburg in Maria Saal was first mentioned in a document, which again underlined the importance of Maria Saal as an ecclesiastical center. The church in its current late Gothic form was expanded into a fortified church with the surrounding monastery buildings in the early to mid-15th century, which proved its worth during the Turkish invasions from 1473 to 1483. After a devastating fire in 1669, the church received its current appearance during restoration. On this occasion, the "Maria Saalerin," Carinthia's largest bell, was cast for the north tower and consecrated in 1688. Over 2000 years of eventful history characterize the cathedral and its surrounding area: world-famous Roman stone reliefs on the facade, unique frescoes inside the cathedral, enchanting Gothic carving, and a very special Baroque organ. Outstanding sacred art from six centuries to the modern era awaits you. Since 2018, the medieval church fortress has been surrounded by a contemporary Stations of the Cross, which consists of over 20 tons of iron, aluminum, and stainless steel. In the old moat, the Passion of Christ up to the Resurrection is impressively related to modern life reality. Located in the center of Carinthia and thus in the immediate vicinity of Klagenfurt, you can reach the historically rich, dreamy pilgrimage site of Maria Saal in a few minutes and let yourself be enchanted by the beauty of the house of God and its surroundings with numerous works of art from antiquity to the present.
