Der Zehner-Trauner

Aschach a.d. Donau, Upper Austria

In the area of Aschach with its many quarries, it was primarily stones that were transported for bank stabilization and other river engineering measures - whether "underhand" - rowing downstream - or in "return" with horse power. In some museums, those so-called "Stoaböck" can still be seen: ladder wheelbarrows made of solid hardwood, fitted with centimeter-thick iron bands and weighing around 80 kg. Even unloaded, they could serve as training equipment for today's "bodybuilder"! And now, several stones, the smallest of which weighed approx. 30 kg, on top, and then the man drove with a load of up to 300 kg from the stone storage area over the "Stegladen" onto the Trauner - at higher water levels even uphill! Since the arms could not carry the load alone, a strap called a "Stroafband" was placed from the handles of the "Stoabock" over the shoulders, which, while making the work easier, inevitably dragged the man into the Danube if he slipped from the "Laden"! This work, which seems almost inhuman to us today, was called "EINSCHEIBEN" and yet had to provide daily bread for some of our great-grandfathers!
